  • In My Senior Year, the Uw Aero Department’s Shop Constructed a Rotary Engine of My Design. the Head of the Aero Machine Shop Was Otto and He Was a German Machinist. I Showed Otto My Rough Engineering Drawing and Otto Wanted to Review the Drawing. the Next Day Otto Told Me They Couldn’t Build the Prototype Because It Would Take One of His Machinist 6 Months to Fabricate. I Was Disappointed but I Mentioned That I Was Able to Build a Very Rough Prototype, on My Drill Press at Home. This Sparked Otto’s Interest and He Wanted to See the Prototype. the Next Day Otto Was So Impressed With My Rough Prototype That He Wanted to Machine a Neater Assembly. of Course Their Prototype Was Much Better but It Still Needed Improvements but This Rotary Engine Design Does Have Potential. otto Later Told Me That Many of the Students That Were Going for Their Masters or Phds, Would Make Machine Designs That Were Essentially Impossible to Build. So My Design and Prototype Were Not the Norm.
  • While Attending Aocs, I Was Not Doing Well in Some Military Classes but With My Aa Degree I Aced the Aero Exam. the Day After the Test I Was on Watch, So I Was Late Getting to Class. a Marine Major Was the Aero Professor, He Asked the Class… major: “is This Candidate Knotts Some Sort of Brain?” class: “no!” i Arrived in the Classroom from My Watch and the Major Asked… major: “are You Candidate Knotts?” me: “yes Sir.” major: “well You Did Pretty Well on the Aero Exam.” me: “oh?” major: “yes, You Got 100%!” me: “that’s Good!” major: “i Was Wondering, How Did You Do So Well on This Exam?” me: “well Sir, I’m an Aeronautical Engineer.” major: “i’ve Been Talking to the Rest of Your Class and They Said You’re Doing Poorly in Some Other Classes… Why Are You Doing So Poorly in Your Other Classes?” me: “well Sir, I’m an Aeronautical Engineer.” that Got a Pretty Good Laugh out Everyone. of Course This Was Not the Norm Since Aero, Engines & Nav. Were the Hard Classes.
  • I Flew and Soloed in the T-28 Trojan Trainer at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Tx. While I Had Limited Flight Time Coming Into the Navy, I Could Actually Fly the T-28 Quite Well. I Could Even Land the T-28 Better Than One of My Instructor Pilots, Who’s the One That Gave Me My First Down Flight (maybe He Was Jealous of My Smooth Landings). Again My Difficult Was Memorizing Emergency Procedures and Getting Up to Speed on Entry Patterns, Etc. at That Time, the Navy Had More Pilots Than They Needed, So They Had a Strict 3 Strikes Policy (e.g. 3 Down Flights). Also the T-28 Was Being Decommissioned When I Was Going Through Training, So the Students That Flew the T-28’s Got Bounced Around to Different Instructor Pilots and of Course, Each Instructor Had Slightly Different Methods for Their Training. Needless to Say, the Decommissioning of the T-28 and My Weak Memory and the Navy’s Reduced Need for Pilots; All Prevented Me from Getting My Wings.
